UPC evaluation system unveiled at A-B

Anheuser-Busch, Inc., recently reached an agreement with Information Resources Inc. (IRI) to begin a voluntary program of UPC evaluation.

"Firstpass 97" is IRI's UPC evaluation service that will allow manufacturers and retailers to test symbol integrity. The program will provide a method to recognize and prevent bar code problems associated with reduced ability to correctly interpret a UPC code on the first scan.

"We are conscious of the potential expense attributed to ineffective UPC codes and are taking the necessary steps to ensure proper scanning ability of our beer brands," reported Mark Danner, vice president of national accounts at Anheuser-Busch. "Through this service, we have another means for assisting our retailers in improving their profitability.

"This service improves symbol quality, resulting in better utilization of scanner data for our space management system and marketing decisions," Danner noted.
