UO surplus sale offers fans athletic gear aplenty.
In a town full of Duck fans, a garage sale of discounted green and yellow gear is likely to draw a crowd.
That's exactly what University of Oregon athletic department organizers are expecting this morning, as they hold their 20th annual surplus sale - selling off new and used athletic department equipment and clothing from the past year.
Everything from football jerseys and golf polos to softball bats and basketball shorts will be available at marked down prices.
The sale kicks off at 8 a.m., but event organizer Carol Jaeger, the athletic department's equipment manager, says she expects people much, much earlier.
"Some people are camping out overnight," she said. "Others will line up at 5:30 a.m. - you see them out there with their lounge chairs and coffee."
Eager shoppers need not worry, Jaeger said.
"There's plenty for everyone," she said Friday, gesturing to a tent lined with shoe boxes and tables stacked with shirts and sweatshirts.
Shoppers should expect discounted prices on authentic team apparel: $3 for T-shirts, $15 for hoodies, $25 for warm-up sets, $50 for jerseys and $25 for shoes and cleats. The sale's proceeds go back to the athletic department.
Parking is free, and cars should enter through Gate 5 at Autzen Stadium and head to the white tent near the entrance of PK Park.
The draw of having specialty items such as Pendleton blankets emblazoned with the Oregon "O" and authentic football jerseys, is enough to get most Ducks fired up, Jaeger says.
"They're coming from all over," she said. "I've heard we have people coming from as far away as Washington and California."
Jaeger expects to have the help of a staff of about 10 people Saturday to help control crowds and keep merchandise sorted.
The sheer size and scale of the event is a far cry from the first year she organized the sale 20 years ago, she said.
"Over the years, athletics has just changed," she said. "This is big, big business."
In the old days, the sale was held in the equipment cage in the basement of Mac Court, she said.
"People used to line up all the way around Mac and down 18th Street," she said. "But over the years, we realized we needed more room."
Friday, crews were busy setting up - hauling boxes filled with wrestling gear and track spikes into the tent.
"Some of this stuff, we probably have enough to outfit a whole team," Jaeger said, gesturing at a box of softball helmets and catcher's gear. "That's one of the things - we really like when people can get good use out of it."
