UO Street Fair gets bigger.

Byline: Greg Bolt The Register-Guard

Think of it as a midweek Saturday Market, with a little something extra.

The annual University of Oregon Fall Street Fair will run Wednesday through Oct. 7 on the stretch of East 13th Avenue that runs through campus. More than 50 vendors will offer merchandise, crafts and food from around the world.

Although the event runs every year, organizers are beefing up the fair and welcoming the off-campus community as well as students and staff.

David Watson, the student government's marketing director, said the fair is starting to get some notice on the national vendors circuit and is attracting artisans who travel to larger fairs on the weekend.

"We're a great stopover because we're in the middle of the week," he said. "Somebody can stop here, make some money and go on to their next show and it's just a bonus in their schedule."

The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, with a new evening entertainment event on Thursday. Live music featuring the Crown City Rockers will run from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the EMU Amphitheater, 1222 E. 13th Ave.

Another new feature is the Club Carnival, where campus organizations will set up game booths and offer prizes to raise money for student activities.

A number of Saturday Market vendors take part in the Street Fair, but it draws from other fairs as well. Watson said a number of people who regularly set up booths at Portland's Saturday Market are now stopping at the Street Fair.

The Street Fair is a fundraiser for student government, which uses the proceeds to fund many of its campus projects during the year. And with the rising profile of the fair on the vendor circuit, Watson said they hope to raise its profile in the community as well.

"We want to remind people that the University of Oregon is part of their community too," he said. "With the recognition that we're getting from the vendors on the national market, it's the belief of student government that it's time to start looking at expanding the Street Fair in a more interactive event.

`It's always been open to the public, but now we're encouraging people to come in."

A Spring Street Fair is held after the start of spring term.
