UNUSUAL EVENT TERMINATED AT OYSTER CREEK

UNUSUAL EVENT TERMINATED AT OYSTER CREEK
FORKED RIVER, N.J., May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- An Unusual Event that was

declared at the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station early Monday morning was terminated at 6:35 a.m. after the plant went back on normal off-site electrical power following a large brush fire which interrupted that service for a time yesterday.
The plant had been on an Alert status up until 5:05 a.m. this morning. That emergency level was downgraded to an Unusual Event after the threat to the plant's off-site electrical power posed by the brush fire subsided.
Plant facilities had been operating on power supplied by two emergency diesel generators beginning at about 1:30 yesterday afternoon when the plant lost off-site electrical power due to the fire. Off-site power was restored around 6:30 this morning.
The Alert, which is next to the lowest emergency condition that can be declared at a nuclear power plant, was called by plant operators at 2:34 p.m. Sunday as a precautionary measure following the disruption of off-site electrical power caused by the fire.
The reactor shut down automatically when off-site power was lost and the emergency diesel generators began supplying electricity to the plant.
During the Alert, all cooling systems normally used to shutdown and cool the plant operated as designed. Emergency electrical power sources were available throughout the event.
There have been no releases of radioactivity and none of the station's structures were affected by the fire.
Federal, state and local officials have been notified.
Oyster Creek is owned by Jersey Central Power & Light and operated by GPU Nuclear.
