Bonn2011 Conference 'The Water, Energy and Food Security Nexus', Bonn, Germany
16 November 2011 - 18 November 2011
UNU-WIDER focal point:
James Thurlow Research Fellow
Bioenergy has been put forward as one potential solution to energy security needs, problems of energy access and to climate change, but over recent years concerns have arisen regarding the actual environmental, social and economic viability of bioenergy developments. Developing countries need to identify sustainable strategies capable of reaping the benefits while mitigating the risks. At a minimum, negative impacts must be identified. This session will start by providing an outline of the issues and show how developing countries might address the bioenergy Nexus. It will then be opened up to discussion among the participants. The discussion will be framed around key issues related to Water, Energy and Food Security.
