UNOCAL PLANS DEVELOPMENT OF OFFSHORE MISSISSIPPI GAS RESERVES
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Unocal Corp. (NYSE: UCL) today announced plans to develop deep natural gas reserves on Mobile Block 904 offshore Mississippi, which should produce initially 30 to 40 million cubic feet of gas per day.
Unocal said its operating subsidiary, Union Oil Co. of California, expects to begin gas sales from the field by Jan. 1, 1994. The block 904 field is located about 45 miles southwest of Mobile, Ala., in 61 feet of water. Development plans include a two- slot wellhead platform, a processing platform and a living quarters platform. Total cost of the development is estimated at $20 million.
In February, Unocal reported that the Mobile Block 904 OCS-G 5749 No. 1 well tested at a maximum rate of 97.6 million cubic feet of gas per day through a 42/64-inch choke. The pay zone is in the Upper Jurassic age Norphlet sandstone in a high temperature and high- geopressure reservoir environment and produced through 146 feet of perforations between 22,130 and 22,290 feet. This is the highest announced Norphlet flow rate measured to date in the Mobile OCS area. It is also one of the best ever for the entire Gulf of Mexico producing area.
The processing platform will have facilities to treat the gas, which has low hydrogen sulfide concentrations (120 parts per million), compared with other production in the Mobile area. It has a processing capacity of 80 million cubic feet per day, sufficient to handle production from Mobile block 904, as well as Unocal's share of gas produced from nearby partner-operated properties.
Marty F. Miller, general manager for Unocal's Louisiana/Gulf operations, said, "We looked at various production and transportation alternatives for the field. The final development plan, including offshore gas processing, significantly lowers the cost of development," he said. Miller added that the Mobile block 904 facilities will serve as a prototype for the development of the company's other properties in the Mobile OCS area.
Unocal's subsidiary is operator and holds a 100 percent interest in the field. Mobile Block 904 is part of a 23,040-acre, four-block unit (Blocks 904, 905, 948 and 949) in which the company holds a 100 percent interest.
Unocal is the largest acreage holder on the Mobile OCS, with 85,563 net acres on 24 blocks. The company is operator for 16 of those blocks.
The Mobile Block 904 discovery followed other Mobile-area gas finds announced in December 1991 on the Union-operated Mobile block 916 (45.65 percent Union), 37 miles to the east, and the Chevron- operated Mobile block 861 (25 percent Union), three miles to the northeast.
