UNOCAL CORP. TO BEGIN PHASING OUT MOTOR FUEL MARKETING THROUGH
MARKETERS AND DEALERS IN THE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES
LOS ANGELES, March 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Unocal Corp. (NYSE: UCL) today said that it will begin phasing out motor fuel marketing through marketers and dealers in the southeastern United States.
The company's announcement comes after four months of intensive discussions with Louis Dreyfus Energy Corp., which has decided not to acquire Unocal's branded marketing and retailing operations in the southeastern United States. Louis Dreyfus continues to have a high level of interest in purchasing Unocal's distribution terminal operations in the region.
"We worked hard over the past year with our investment advisor to pursue a sale or joint venture of our branded marketing operations in the southeastern U.S." said Roger C. Beach, Unocal senior vice president and president of the Unocal Refining and Marketing Division.
"We are restructuring our marketing organization to consolidate retail operations in our strong West Coast market. Service station operations in the southeastern market does not support our West Coast strategy, so we have begun an orderly process of not renewing fuel supply contracts with our southeastern marketers and dealers as those contracts expire."
Unocal today began notifying its marketers and dealers in the Southeast of its decision. Existing contracts with these marketers will remain in force for up to three years.
Unocal announced in mid-November it had entered into exclusive negotiations with Louis Dreyfus for the sale of Unocal's southeastern U.S. petroleum products marketing and distribution terminals operations. Unocal expects to complete the sale of all or a portion of the distribution terminal properties to Louis Dreyfus shortly.
Unocal will retain ownership of its Savannah, Ga., lubricant plant and terminal.
Separately, the company is seeking buyers for its retail service station properties, located principally in the Atlanta, and Birmingham, Ala., areas.
The decision by Louis Dreyfus does not affect Unocal's Auto/TruckStops facilities in the Southeast. Unocal continues to negotiate with WSGP Partners and a limited partnership of Unocal truck stop operators for the sale of the company's national Auto/TruckStop network, which includes approximately 140 Unocal 76 branded facilities on interstate highways.
