UNOCAL APPOINTS ROGER C. BEACH PRESIDENT AND CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER
 LOS ANGELES, June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Unocal Corporation (NYSE: UCL) today said the board of directors has appointed Roger C. Beach as the company's president and chief operating officer, effective immediately.
 Richard J. Stegemeier will continue as Unocal's chairman and chief executive officer. Stegemeier had held the title of president.
 The board also named John F. Imle, Jr., as executive vice president, Energy Resources.
 In addition, the company combined the Refining and Marketing Division and Chemicals and Minerals Division into a single new unit called Petroleum and Chemical Products. Neal E. Schmale was named senior vice president for the new group.
 Beach, 55, was senior vice president, and president of the Unocal Refining and Marketing Division.
 He joined Pure Oil Company in 1961 and held various positions in refineries at Lemont, Ill., and Toledo, Ohio. Following Pure's merger with Union Oil Company, Unocal's operating subsidiary, he continued with the company's refining operations, becoming general superintendent of the Beaumont, Texas, refinery in 1972.
 He participated in the President's Interchange Program in Washington, D.C., in 1975, and then returned to Unocal as manager of special projects, and vice president, Crude Supply, in 1980. Beach became president of the Unocal Refining and Marketing Division in 1986. He was named a Unocal senior vice president in 1987, and was elected to the company's board of directors in 1988.
 Beach is the chairman of the board of the National Petroleum Refiners Association. He also serves as chairman of the board of the Western States Petroleum Association and is a member of the board of directors of the American Petroleum Institute. He is a member of the executive committee, as well as the board of trustees of the National 4-H, and has been honored as Outstanding Alum by the National 4-H Council.
 Beach holds a bachelor's degree in petroleum refining engineering from the Colorado School of Mines.
 Imle, 51, had been senior vice president, Energy Resources, with responsibility for Unocal's crude oil, natural gas and geothermal energy exploration and production activities.
 Imle joined the company in 1963 after graduation from Texas A&M University with degrees in petroleum and mechanical engineering. He worked in Unocal's Alaska operations, West Africa and the North Sea including a stint as project manager for Unocal's Heather field in the United Kingdom and resident manager of the company's Netherlands operations.
 In 1983, he was appointed president, Unocal International Oil & Gas Division. He became senior vice president, Energy Resources, and a member of the company's board of directors in 1988.
 Schmale, 45, had been senior vice president, Corporate Development, and president, Unocal Chemicals and Minerals Division. In his new post, he will have responsibility for Unocal's downstream refining and marketing activities as well as Molycorp, nitrogen fertilizer and petroleum coke operations.
 Schmale joined Unocal in 1968 as a drilling engineer. He served in various reservoir and drilling engineering positions until receiving his law degree. He worked in Unocal's Legal Department from 1974 until 1979, and became director, Corporate Economics and Budgets in 1981.
 He was appointed vice president, Budgets, Planning and Economics in 1986, was elected senior vice president in 1988. In 1991, he became president, Unocal Chemicals and Minerals Division, and was elected to the board of directors.
 Schmale earned a bachelor's degree in petroleum engineering at Colorado School of Mines and juris doctor degree from Loyola University of Los Angeles in 1974.
