UNOCAL, OTHERS, DISCOVER OIL ON YEMEN'S EAST SHABWA BLOCK

LOS ANGELES, April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Unocal Corp. said today a wildcat exploration well has discovered crude oil on the East Shabwa block (Block 10) in Yemen.
The well, Kharir No. 2, tested a cumulative 12,0e reservoirs. Tests on the individual zones ranged from 350 to 5,700 barrels of oil per day.
Unocal holds a 28.57 percent interest in the block, which includes more than 1.1 million acres of prospective oil lands. Total Yemen, operator of East Shabwa block, and Pecten Yemen Co., a subsidiary of Shell Oil Co. U.S.A., each hold 28.57 percent. Kufpec (Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Co.) holds the remaining 14.29 percent.
"We are very encouraged by the test results," said John F. Imle Jr., Unocal executive vice president and president, Unocal Energy Resources Division. "More appraisal work on this structure is expected to confirm commerciality. We're also optimistic about the numerous additional prospects in the block."
Imle noted that the Kharir No. 3 well is currently drilling three miles northeast of the Kharir No. 2 discovery, and the company expects to begin testing shortly. The Kharir No. 1 well, less than a mile southwest of the Kharir No. 2, encountered hydrocarbons and is now being tested now. The East Shabwa block is located in central Yemen and the discovery is on the same trend as discoveries made by others on an adjacent block.
