UNOCAL, PARTNERS APPRAISE YEMEN OIL DISCOVERY

LOS ANGELES, July 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Unocal Corp. today announced the successful drill stem testing of two oil wells on the East Shabwa block (Block 10) in central Yemen. These appraisal results from the Kharir No. 1 and No. 3 wells follow the test of wildcat exploration well Kharir No. 2 announced in April 1993.
The well Kharir No. 1 tested 3,450 barrels of oil per day of 32 degree (API) oil from one test in Lower Cretaceous sandstone reservoirs between 5,722 feet and 5,773 feet.
The Kharir No. 3 well, four miles to the northeast of Kharir No. 1, tested a cumulative 10,700 barrels of oil per day from four tests in Cretaceous reservoirs between 5,622 feet and 6,824 feet. Individual tests ranged from 300 to 4,800 barrels of oil per day with gravities from 30.5 to 34 degrees (API).
In April, Unocal announced that the Kharir No. 2 discovery had tested a cumulative 12,000 barrels of oil per day from four zones between 5,500 feet and 5,900 feet in Lower Cretaceous sandstone. It is located less than one mile northeast of Kharir No. 1 and about three miles southwest of Kharir No. 3.
"We're pleased with the results from the Kharir 1, 2, and 3 wells," said John F. Imle Jr., executive vice president of Unocal and president of its Energy Resources Division. "Unocal and partners," he said, "are now working on development plans to determine the commerciality of the Kharir field. We're also continuing our exploration drilling program elsewhere in the block."
Unocal holds a 28.57 percent interest in the block, which includes more than 1.1 million acres of prospective oil lands. Total Yemen, operator of East Shabwa block, and Pecten Yemen Co., a subsidiary of Shell Oil Co., U.S.A., each hold 28.57 percent. Kufpec (Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Co.) holds the remaining 14.29 percent.
