UNO REPORTS EARNINGS FOR SECOND FISCAL QUARTER

BOSTON, April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Uno Restaurant Corporation (NYSE: UNO) today announced that net income for the second quarter of fiscal 1993 was $643,000, or 7 cents per share, compared to $634,000, or 7 cents per share, for the same period last year. Revenue for the second quarter increased 26 percent to $24.8 million from $19.6 million for the comparable period last year.
In making the announcement, Aaron Spencer, chairman and CEO, stated, "Business fundamentals improved more during the quarter than either our comparable-store sales or net income comparisons indicate. The harshest winter in over a decade, including the snowiest March on record in Boston, led to comparable-store sales that were down 3.5 percent and net income that was marginally improved from the same quarter last year. However, despite the difficult weather conditions, operating income (before interest and taxes) increased by 33.5 percent to $1.4 million. Had the weather been no worse than last year, we have estimated that sales would have been almost $600,000 higher, comparable-store sales would have been virtually even, and earnings per share would have been 29 percent greater. As further evidence of the weather's impact during February and March (when same-store sales were down 5.5 percent and 5.9 percent, respectively) same-store sales were up .1 percent during January and 1.6 percent for the four weeks since March 14 (the 'Blizzard of 1993')."
Spencer further stated that, "Weather was a dominant issue in our analysis of the quarter. However, it is not presented as an excuse for our performance, but rather as a factor that temporarily masked what we believe is a fundamental improvement in business trends. On a weather- adjusted basis, comparable-store sales were even with a year ago, and average weekly sales were 2.2 percent higher, reflecting higher-than- average sales levels at our newest units. Also, sales continued to grow rapidly in our consumer product business, up 88 percent to $1.9 million. Our new production facility, our contract with American Airlines, and expanded distribution into supermarkets in the New York metropolitan area fueled this growth. Current projections indicate that consumer product sales during the second half of the fiscal year will grow even more rapidly to approximately $4.6 million, compared to $1.4 million for the same period last year. Our fundamental business trends improved noticeably during the second quarter, setting the stage for what we believe will be a resumption of meaningful earnings growth for the balance of fiscal year 1993."
Uno Restaurant Corporation owns and operates 53 and franchises 63 casual dining, full-service restaurants under the name "Pizzeria Uno Restaurant & Bar". The company units are located principally in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, and the franchised units operate nationwide.
