UNLIMITED HYDROPLANE SEASON READY TO ROLL

DETROIT, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- When the 1993 R.C. Cola Unlimited Hydroplane Series starts with action at the Sneaky Pete's Hydrofest in Lewisville, Texas, this Sunday, May 30, the Unlimited fleet will be one step closer to the 1993 Budweiser American Power Boat Association (APBA) Gold Cup here in Detroit.
The action in Detroit starts with qualifying on Thursday, June 3, and Friday, June 4, with both Unlimited hydroplane and Grand Prix boats racing on Saturday, June 5, and Sunday, June 6.
An estimated crowd of 500,000 fans will be on hand along the Detroit River shoreline to watch one of the city's great sports traditions continue. A fleet of approximately 10 boats is expected to battle for the Gold Cup -- powerboating's most prestigious trophy.
Last year's Gold Cup winner and APBA High Point Driver of 1992 Chip Hanauer (Seattle) and the Miss Budweiser team will return to Detroit. Hanauer will be looking for an unprecedented ninth Gold Cup title, and Budweiser owner Bernie Little will look for his 10th championship as owner.
Mark Tate (Plymouth, Mich.) will try to return the city of Detroit's hold on the Gold Cup in 1993, driving the Winston-Eagle. Tate made it four Gold Cup victories in a row for a Detroit driver winning in 1991. Tom D'eath (Fair Haven, Mich.) won the Gold Cup in 1988, 1989 and 1990 driving the Miss Budweiser.
The boats will be arriving in the Horace E. Dodge Memorial Pits (at the foot of Marquette Street next to The Roostertail Catering Club) as early as Tuesday, June 1.
BROADCAST NOTES: The 1993 Budweiser APBA Gold Cup can be heard on 98.7, WLLZ-FM. This will be the first time WLLZ-FM will carry the race. Russ Small returns from Houston to anchor the race for the fourth straight year. In other broadcast news, starting this Sunday, WMTG-AM, 1310 will carry the final heat of all URC races this season. Commentator Jim Hendrick will broadcast all races to be aired from 8-8:30 p.m. EDT throughout the race year. Only the Honolulu race will be aired at a later time. That race will be broadcast live beginning at 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 24.
PIT SHUTTLE: The Spirit of Detroit Thunderfest will operate a shuttle to the pits for the fans in the box seats at the Gar Wood judges stand on Saturday, June 5, and Sunday, June 6. The shuttle will allow fans to see the boats up close while keeping their favorite seats at the start-finish line.
FREE VIEWING, SATURDAY, JUNE 5: To show its appreciation for Detroit's continued support of boat racing, the Spirit of Detroit Thunderfest will provide free viewing of Saturday's racing at all general admission parks along East Jefferson. These parks include Owens, Erma Henderson, Memorial Annex and Stockton. Tickets will be required on Sunday only and may be purchased at the gate.
AUTOGRAPH SESSION: An official autograph session with all the Unlimited drivers will take place Friday, June 4, at 6 p.m. at the Big Boy "Riverside Cafe" in Waterworks Park. Driver posters will be sold at a nominal cost. All profits from the sale of the posters will be used to build a fund for Unlimited driver families in need.
