UNIX INTERNATIONAL ANNOUNCES EARLY ACCESS FOR UNIX SYSTEM V
RELEASE 4 ES/MP; ADDS MULTIPROCESSING TO ENHANCED SECURITY UNIX SVR4
PARSIPPANY, N.J., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Through its Early Access Program, UNIX International (UI) today provided its members with access to a development version of UNIX(R) System V Release 4.2 Enhanced Security/Multiprocessing (ES/MP) being developed by UNIX System Laboratories (USL).
This pre-release adds significant enhancements including support for up to 30 processors and has been architected to allow:
 -- Dynamic Reconfiguration
 -- Fault Resilience
-- Parallel Processing which will allow a single application to
take advantage of a multiple processor architecture
All of this new functionality is being built upon the existing SVR4.1 ES release and provides compatibility with all existing Release 4 applications. This early version will be used by major UNIX system vendors to begin porting to their existing and forthcoming multiprocessor platforms. It is anticipated that USL will make this technology generally available in early to mid 1993.
With the forthcoming availability of the ES/MP release and the Desktop version of SVR4, the UNIX System V Release 4 family will offer implementations optimized for systems ranging from desktops to mainframes.
The ES/MP Release was developed by UNIX System Laboratories in partnership with Sequent Computer Systems as well as AT&T, Fujitsu, ICL, Intel, Motorola, Pyramid Technologies and Unisys, who each contributed technology and/or development support. The release will meet the requirements stated in the System V Roadmap and will be conformant with UI-ATLAS(tm).
"The requirements for ES/MP were put together by an experienced team of developers from 43 organizations including industry representatives that participated in the UI Work Group. The result is a development version of the operating system that is a major step beyond any implementation on the market today," said Peter Cunningham, president and CEO of UNIX International.
Roel Pieper, president and CEO of UNIX System Laboratories, stated "System V Release 4 ES/MP meets the requirements that our customers set out in the System V Roadmap. It demonstrates the vitality of the new USL development model in which USL works far more closely with major industry partners to deliver leading edge system software to the entire industry."
SVR4 ES/MP conforms to all significant open systems and industry standards including X/Open's Portability Guide Issue 4 (XPG4), IEEE POSIX and the System V Interface Definition. It maintains both source and binary code compatibility with existing SVR4 products.
The Early Access program was created by UNIX International to furnish early versions of UNIX-based reference technology to its members, allowing systems and software vendors to deliver products to their customers in a shorter period of time than would otherwise be possible.
UNIX International is the not-for-profit international consortium of more than 260 members which include end users, developers, vendors and systems manufacturers. This broad based membership helps define the future of open systems based on the UNIX System V Release 4 family of operating systems and UI-ATLAS, an open system framework providing the environment and services for distributed, desktop and corporate hub computing.
