UNIVISION TO BROADCAST ENTIRE WORLD CUP SCHEDULE

NEW YORK, June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The tradition continues on Univision as the network today proudly announces it will again telecast the World Cup soccer finals, scheduled for the summer of 1994.
From June 17 through July 17, every one of the 52 matches in the tournament will be broadcast on Univision, the only U.S. network doing so. In the First Stage of the competition where simultaneous kickoffs occur, the network will air one match live and the other on a same day, tape delayed basis. Coverage of all matches in the second and third stages will be live.
This will mark the seventh consecutive World Cup that Univision will be providing Spanish-language coverage for, an unprecedented commitment to the U.S. Hispanic audience and the sport of soccer in this country. Referring to Univision's coverage of the past World Cup in Italy, Soccer International was quoted as saying that, "Univision, and especially announcers Canter and Longo, gets an unqualified A. The network's coverage before, during and after the World Cup was excellent." Moreover, another article from the Los Angeles Times also reported that, "KMEX (a Univision affiliate in Los Angeles) has seen its audience jump by 25 percent to 50 percent during the World Cup matches, and the station is outdrawing...TNT cable channel 5 to 1."
In addition to the 52-match schedule, Univision will build viewer interest through a series of 60-second, prime time World Cup moments, along with preview programs and specials beginning in January 1994.
There is a tremendous sense of anticipation for the '94 Cup, being that it will be held in the United States for the first time ever. Nine cities across the country are preparing for the world's most popular sporting event: Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York/New Jersey, Orlando, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
The magnitude of the World Cup is best evidenced by the sheer volume of television viewers its attracts: an astounding cumulative total of 26.7 billion viewers saw the '90 Cup from Italy, and the championship match alone was seen by one billion viewers. In the United States, Univision will be televising each and every match to just over 20 million Hispanics residing here.
There will be 24 nations represented at the Finals, including the host country U.S., the defending champion Germany, and Mexico, the first team to qualify from a regional playoff. The remaining 21 teams will qualify by November of this year, and one month later they will be drawn into groups in a "Sorteo," or Draw For Positions which Univision also anticipates airing.
Univision, the nation's leading Spanish-language television network, reaches 91 percent of U.S. Hispanic households through satellite- inconnected broadcast and cable affiliates nationwide.
