UNIVISION PROMOTES MARTINEZ TO SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, NEWS AND SPORTS
MIAMI, June 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Veteran journalist Guillermo Martinez was promoted to Univision senior vice president, news and sports, announces today Ray Rodriguez, president and CEO of Univision Holdings, Inc. In this capacity, Martinez will oversee all national and local news and sports broadcasts for the television network and station group.
"We can directly attribute the success of Univision's news programs to Guillermo's dedication to journalistic excellence," said Rodriguez. "His professional experience and credibility have proven invaluable to us."
Formerly vice president of news, Martinez will assume additional responsibility with this appointment for directing the network's sports department and its coverage of worldwide sporting events. He will continue to oversee the production of "Noticiero Univision," "Noticias y Mas," and "Portada," in addition to network news specials such as "Destino '92" and "Voces del Pueblo."
Martinez, 50, joined Univision as news director for WLTV, Univision's Miami station, in 1987. He was promoted to vice president, director of news and public affairs for the network in 1988.
Prior to his career in broadcast journalism, Martinez was an established print journalist and columnist. For 12 years, he worked at The Miami Herald, where he ultimately served as senior editor and member of the Editorial Board. His extensive, international news media experience also includes serving as a congressional correspondent in Washington, D.C., as UPI's bureau chief in Peru, and as a news editor in Argentina.
A founding member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Martinez is the 1986 recipient of the Inter-American Press Association Award for editorial commentary on Latin America. He also was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the Mariel boat lift in 1980.
Univision Holding, Inc. is the largest Spanish-language media and marketing services company in the United States. Its principal operating entities include the Univision network, which reaches 90 percent of the U.S. Hispanic households via satellite-interconnected broadcast and cable affiliates, the Univision station group of nine full-power television stations, and Mas magazine.
