UNIVISION AND BILLBOARD PRESENT 'PREMIO LO NUESTRO A LA MUSICA LATINA,' A STAR-STUDDED MUSIC AWARDS EXTRAVAGANZA

MIAMI, May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Hispanic viewers across the United States will be tuned in to watch Premio Lo Nuestro a la Musica Latina, the preeminent Latin music awards ceremony in the country, when it airs on the nation's leading Spanish-language television network on May 20. Veteran funny-man Paul Rodriguez will host this fifth anniversary extravaganza ceremony, which will be televised live from the James L. Knight Convention Center in Miami beginning at 8 p.m. ET (check local listings).
The Premio Lo Nuestro special annually attracts some of the network's highest ratings. Last year, the broadcast obtained a 37 household rating and was viewed by 3.8 million adults aged 18 and over in 2.5 million households.
Now in its fifth year, Premio Lo Nuestro has hosted a constellation of well-known Latin stars throughout its existence. In the past, such legends of Latin music as Placido Domingo, Celia Cruz, Juan Gabriel and Gloria Estefan, among others, have been in attendance at the event. Spectacular nominees who will be performing at this year's ceremony include Ana Gabriel, Gloria Trevi, La Mafia, Angela Carrasco and Gilberto Santarosa, to name just a few.
Nominees for the different Premio Lo Nuestro categories were determined from Billboard's weekly rankings of Latin music and classified into three musical genres: Pop/Ballad, Tropical/Salsa and Regional Mexican. There are also two special categories for rap music and video of the year. In addition, a new subcategory, female artist of the year, has been added to the Tropical/Salsa list of nominations.
Voting for the awards is being conducted among record retailers and radio program directors from Spanish-language radio stations throughout the U.S. and in Puerto Rico. Results will be tabulated and certified by the accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche.
The special telecast will be carried by Univision's broadcast affiliates, more than 600 cable affiliates, and in several countries throughout Latin America. Last year's production was seen in Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
Premio Lo Nuestro was first created in 1989 as a joint venture between Univision and Billboard magazine to recognize excellence in Latin music. It is considered the Latin equivalent of the Grammy awards of the English-language music industry.
Univision, the nation's leading Spanish-language television network, reaches 91 percent of U.S. Hispanic households through satellite- interconnected broadcast and cable affiliates nationwide.
