UNIVISION'S 'PREMIO ENCUENTRO 1992' BECOMES THE
MOST IMPORTANT EVENT OF THE YEAR FOR HISPANICS
MIAMI, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- President George Bush, Ricardo Montalban, Vikki Carr and Linda Ronstadt were among the many world- famous celebrities and political figures that participated in last night's "Premio Encuentro 1992." The spectacular event, which celebrated Hispanic achievement and culture, aired live from the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. on Univision.
The president lent his support for the event with a videotaped message that aired during the two-hour live broadcast. "The five individuals that you honor here tonight are the embodiment of Hispanic spirit and culture," he said. "I salute them, one and all, and I share the excitement for this commemoration and what it represents for all Americans."
Hosted by Vikki Carr and Ricardo Montalban, the event commemorated the quincentennial anniversary of the legendary encounter between the Old and New Worlds, and paid tribute to five outstanding Hispanic Americans.
Honored at "Premio Encuentro 1992" were respected performer and actress Miriam Colon Valle (arts and literature); long-time civic activist Cesar Chavez (community service); legendary singer Celia Cruz (entertainment); admired scientist Dr. John Fernando Alderete (science and technology); and former Dodger pitcher Fernando Valenzuela (sports). Each honoree received $10,000 to be donated to the charity of his or her choice, and a tangible symbol of this honor, an award exclusively designed for Univision by Tiffany and Co.
"'Premio Encuentro' is not only Spanish-language television's most important event of the year, it's Hispanic America's most important event of the year," said Ray Rodriguez, president and CEO of Univision.
"The 'Premio Encuentro' is designed to salute the excellence and achievements of Hispanics everywhere," said Raul Torano, chairman of the board for Univision Holdings. "We thank our major sponsors and supporters for making this event possible."
Throughout "Premio Encuentro 1992," internationally acclaimed performers such as Celia Cruz, Emmanuel, Jose Jose, Tito Puente, as well as world-famous ballet dancer Fernando Bujones, and the Ballet Folklorico de Chile, delighted a black-tie crowd of more than 2,000 at the entertainment spectacular, in addition to more than six million television viewers.
The evening's guest list included government officials, diplomatic representatives, and prominent business and community leaders from around the world.
Partial proceeds from the event will benefit the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), a non-profit organization that serves as an advocate for Hispanic Americans. As an umbrella for more than 130 community-based organizations that serve Hispanics throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico, NCLR seeks to create opportunities and address problems of discrimination and poverty in the Hispanic community.
"Premio Encuentro" was created, produced and braodcast live by Univision. Unvision, the nation's leading Spanish-language television network, reaches 90 percent of U.S. Hispanic households through satellite-interconnected broadcast and cable affiliates nationwide.
