UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN SYSTEM PRESIDENT LYALL
 ELECTED TO KEMPER NATIONAL BOARDS
LONG GROVE, Ill., May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Katharine Lyall, Ph.D., president of the University of Wisconsin System, was elected to the boards of the Kemper National Insurance Companies at their annual meetings today.
Lyall, 50, joined the UW System in 1981 as vice president for academic affairs. She had served as executive vice president since 1984 and was the system's acting president from June 1985 to February 1986 and again from August 1991 until she was appointed to the presidency in April 1992. She is the first woman to hold that position. Lyall is also a professor of economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Before joining the UW System, Lyall had served as deputy assistant secretary for economic affairs at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. She was also a professor of political economy and director of the graduate program in public policy at Johns Hopkins University and was on the faculty of the department of economics at the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. She also served on the research staff of the Chase Manhattan Bank.
"Kemper National's boards and policyholders will benefit greatly from Katharine Lyall's wealth of experience in academia, business and government," said Gerald L. Maatman, Kemper National chairman and chief executive officer.
Lyall replaces Joseph E. Luecke, 65, former Kemper National chairman, who retired from the boards today.
Kemper National, with 1991 sales of $3.2 billion, operates in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and many foreign markets. The organization comprises four companies. They are Lumbermens Mutual Casualty Company, American Motorists Insurance Company, American Protection Insurance Company and American Manufacturers Mutual Insurance Company.
