UNIVERSITY AFFILIATED PROGRAMS.

Authorized by federal legislation to help people with developmental disabilities and their families participate fully in their communities, University Affiliated Programs (UAPs) operate in academic settings to provide training, technical assistance, and direct services, conduct research, share information, and help consumers and their families find services. As a bridge between the academic world and the developmental disabilities service delivery system, UAPs work collaboratively with state agencies, their local affiliates, and various nongovernmental consumer-based organizations to build the capacity of communities to sustain all their citizens, including people with special needs.

UAP Mental Retardation/Developmental Disabilities Research Centers, indicated by an (R) following the center name, are also included in this directory even though they are research--as opposed to direct service--facilities. These centers develop essential knowledge and information upon which to base new and improved treatments, supports, and services. Some of these research centers are housed at the same academic settings as the UAPs providing direct services.

These listings were provided by the American Association of University Affiliated Programs for Persons with Developmental Disabilities, 8630 Fenton St., Ste. 410, Silver Spring, MD 20910; telephone: (301) 588-8252 (voice); (301) 588-3319 (TDD); fax: (301) 588-2842; Web site: http://www.aauap.org.

When available, e-mail addresses and World Wide Web sites have been included. E-mail addresses are indicated by the symbol ??. Web sites are listed with the standard http:// before each. (Unless otherwise indicated, telephone numbers are for voice only.)
