UNIVERSAL PICTURES SIGNS PRODUCTION DEAL WITH NANCY ROBERTS, RON
UNDERWOOD, BRENT MADDOCK AND S.S. WILSON
UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., Feb. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Agency owner Nancy Roberts, director Ron Underwood ("City Slickers"), and writer/producers Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson, who recently formed a new production partnership, have signed a first look production agreement with Universal Pictures, it was announced today (Feb. 28) by Tom Pollock, chairman of the MCA Motion Picture Group, and Casey Silver, president of production for Universal Pictures.
The two-year, non-exclusive deal with Universal covers all projects developed by the as yet unnamed production company. The agreement includes the partners' writing, directing and producing services.
Roberts, who will serve as managing partner of the new production entity, has left the agency business, converting The Roberts Co. into a management firm.
In addition to the directing talent of Underwood, the agreement anticipates the directing debut of both Maddock and Wilson. Roberts will produce all projects initiated by the partners.
This agreement marks Underwood's return to the studio which released his feature directing debut, "Tremors." Partners Maddock, Wilson and Roberts currently have a number of projects in development at the studio.
Underwood, Maddock and Wilson first met at USC film school and have worked together on educational, short and animated films. Maddock and Wilson have written or co-written six produced features including "Short Circuit," Universal's "Batteries Not Included" and "Tremors," which was their first film as producers.
"Nancy Roberts, Ron Underwood, Brent Maddock and Steve Wilson have a proven track record of success in writing, developing, producing and directing films of the highest quality," said Pollock. "We are extremely pleased to be continuing our relationship."
Roberts, longtime agent of Underwood, Maddock and Wilson, is converting her boutique agency to a small and selective management company. She will continue as their manager as well as the managing partner of the new company. Roberts was responsible for developing the Maddock/Wilson spec script for "Tremors."
The Roberts Co. will also manage other writer-producers, writer- directors, directors and talent. In addition to the partners, her current clients include Jules Feiffer and Mike Ockrent (director of the Broadway hit "Me and My Girl" and the current Gershwin-based musical "Crazy For You").
"We are delighted to formalize our company's new association with Universal," said managing partner Roberts. "Tom Pollock and Casey Silver have long been supportive of this team and we now look forward to a productive future with the studio."
Lou Malacarne, vice president of The Roberts Co., will be in charge of initial development for the new production company and will combine this work with his normal management duties.
