UNIVERSAL PICTURES ACQUIRES JAMES DICKEY'S 'TO THE WHITE SEA' FOR RICHARD ROTH

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Universal Pictures has acquired the feature film rights to James Dickey's critically praised new novel "To The White Sea," for producer Richard Roth, it was announced today by Tom Pollack, chairman of the MCA Motion Picture Group, and Casey Silver, president of production for Universal Pictures.
Written in a gripping, first-person narrative, the novel -- by the author of the best-seller "Deliverance" -- is the story of an American WWII bomber pilot's struggle to survive after his plane is shot down over Tokyo on the eve of a massive bombing raid. As he escapes from the burning city into the beautiful but merciless Japanese landscape, his journey becomes a violent odyssey that slowly takes him beyond the limits of human endurance. The book will be published by Houghton Mifflin on Sept. 22.
Roth, whose films have earned a total 13 Academy Award nominations, produced the Oscar-winning "Julia," starring Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave and directed by Fred Zinnemann. His other credits include "Manhunter," directed by Michael Mann, David Lynch's "Blue Velvet," and "In Country," directed by Norman Jewison. He is currently developing "Two Lives," which is being written by Alvin Sargent. Roth is also writing an original screenplay with "Less Than Zero" novelist Bret Easton Ellis.
