UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., Dec. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Two Universal Pictures' releases, "Fried Green Tomatoes" and "At Play in the Fields of the Lord," are among the nominees for this year's prestigious Scripter Awards.
Presented by the Friends of USC Libraries, the Scripter Awards honor the authors and screenwriters of the best adaptation of a book as film. The winning film will be named at a black tie gala on Feb. 1, at the Doheny Memorial Library on the University of Southern California campus.
Fannie Flagg and Carol Sobieski were nominated for the screenplay of "Fried Green Tomatoes," based on Flagg's book "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe." The film, which stars Academy Award-winners Kathy Bates and Jessica Tandy with Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker, opens in exclusive engagements in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta and Toronto on Dec. 27.
Nominated for "At Play in the Fields of the Lord" were screenwriters Hector Babenco (who also directs), Claude Carriere and Peter Matthiessen, on whose book the script is based. Starring Tom Berenger, John Lithgow, Daryl Hannah, Aidan Quinn, Tom Waits, and Kathy Bates, the film is currently playing in limited release.
