UNITED WAY OF AMERICA SELECTS AT&T
 WASHINGTON, Jan. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T (NYSE: T) has been selected

to provide satellite broadcast services and associated equipment for a new private, coast-to-coast television network that United Way of America is inaugurating today.
Called Comlink, the network will feature live, interactive programs by satellite from the United Way of America studio in Alexandria, Va., to eventually as many as 100 sites in communities nationwide. Each viewing location will be available to local United Ways and non-profit community groups for teleconferences.
United Way of America President William Aramony called the new service an important step forward for United Way.
"Comlink will help us mobilize around major initiatives and critical issues. United Way professionals and volunteers around the country can exchange important information instantly, conveniently and economically without leaving their communities," he said.
AT&T was awarded a contract potentially worth more than $500,000 to provide end-to-end management of the new communications network, including access, uplink, encrypting, space segment, network management and downlink maintenance.
AT&T's SKYNET Business Television Service, a one-way video service that transmits full-motion, cable-quality television signals via Ku-band satellite, is the backbone of the Comlink network. Television programs will go from the Alexandria studio to an AT&T video uplink in New York by way of Accunet(R) Reserved Digital Service, a fiber-optic digital transmission system.
From the satellite, signals will beam down to 1.8 meter VSAT antennas, provided by AT&T Tridom. United Way will use existing offices and standard television sets to view Comlink programs. AT&T is providing toll-free 800 service for two-way audio communication between the viewing locations and the studio.
Private television networks are a relatively new phenomenon, with fewer than 100 in operation among corporations, government agencies and non-profit organizations.
"This is cutting-edge business communications technology, and the price is becoming more affordable all the time," said Linda Boyd, AT&T's national account director for United Way of America.
United Way's Comlink network is the largest private television network AT&T has developed for a non-profit organization, according to Boyd.
"They can expect lower travel costs, higher operating efficiency, faster decision-making and improved training opportunities, among many benefits from this service," Boyd said.
United Way said it will offer free programs at least monthly to support the local United Ways and community organizations in their business management, campaign planning and volunteer training. Other programs will be developed based on the ideas and suggestions from community groups.
