UNITED UTILITIES TOPS BILL AS PREFERRED BIDDER FOR AUSTRALIAN CONTRACT.

WARRINGTON'S United Utilities has been selected by the South Australian Water Corporation as preferred bidder for a desalination seawater plant contract in Adelaide.

The multi-utility is part of the AdelaideAqua consortium which comprises Acciona Agua, Abigroup, McConnell Dowell and United Utilities Australia.

Work on the design and construction of the scheme is expected to start soon, with a target opening date of December 2010.

Once the plant is complete, around mid-2011, it is intended that United Utilities Australia will operate the site under a separate 20-year operations and maintenance agreement.

UnitedUtilities will have a minimal investment requirement.

Philip Green, the chief executive of United Utilities, added: "We are very pleased to have been awarded preferred bidder status for this operations contract which builds on our existing presence in Australia and utilises our core skills to deliver further growth."
