DETROIT, Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- United Technologies Automotive Inc. (UTA) will be a major supplier to Ford Motor Company's (NYSE: F) electric van program, UTA President Norman R. Bodine announced today.
UTA will supply all low-voltage wiring on the Ecostar van and, in cooperation with Ford, will oversee the vehicle's entire electrical distribution system, Bodine said at a news conference at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International Congress & Exposition in Detroit.
Ford plans to build 80-100 Ecostars late this year for fleet evaluation purposes in 10 U.S. and European cities, including Detroit, Chicago and Los Angeles.
The Ecostar project, although initially a low-volume program, gives UTA close involvement with an alternatively powered vehicle well-suited to its expertise in vehicle wiring systems, Bodine said.
"We're anxious to help Ford move electric vehicle technology forward and we look for high-volume applications down the road," Bodine said. "This contract demonstrates our growing reputation for improving reliability in the complex electrical systems required for vehicles today and in the future."
The Ecostar is based on the European Escort van, in which UTA currently supplies the electrical distribution system through its operations in Europe.
UTA will oversee integration of the traction wiring, part of Ecostar's propulsion system, into the overall vehicle wiring system. Like the European Escort, the Ecostar will be equipped with a junction box inside the instrument panel, supplied by UTA, which allows low- current switching and reduces wiring system complexity.
Reducing weight is a critical consideration in the electric vehicle, Bodine said. UTA hopes to control wire bulk by efficiently routing the hundred of circuits required to power various electrical functions on Ecostar -- from headlamps to turn signals. It also will explore the use of lightweight materials in wire harnesses and related components.
Bodine said UTA's success in improving quality and reliability in highly sensitive vehicle electrical systems was a major factor in landing this contract. An innovative UTA system for tracking and analyzing consumer warranty claims and implementing corrective actions has improved the wiring system reliability on some models by as much as 50 percent in their first year on the road, he said.
"Many of our customers' vehicles now have the highest electrical system reliability of any vehicles in their class," Bodine said.
United Technologies Automotive, with headquarters in Dearborn, Mich., is a major supplier of components and systems to car and truck manufacturers worldwide.
