UNITED TECHNOLOGIES AUTOMOTIVE OPENS FIRST PLANT IN HUNGARY
DEARBORN, Mich., Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- United Technologies Automotive (UTA) officially opened its first plant in Hungary today at a ceremony attended by local and national Hungarian officials, representatives of the U.S. Embassy in Hungary, and senior executives from UTA and its parent company, United Technologies Corp. (UTC) (NYSE: UTX).
The $10 million plant in Godollo, near Budapest, will make electrical wire harnesses for auto manufacturers in western Europe, starting Jan. 1, 1992.
Built in just six months, the 9,000-square-meter factory employs 50 people initially, with employment expected to reach 500 by 1993. A second phase of construction, planned within five years, could add 11,000 square meters of production space and increase employment to 1,000.
"This plant symbolizes the faith and confidence that United Technologies places in Hungary," said Martin Creydt, president of UTA- Europe. "We hope it will also promote the integration of Hungary's industry with the European and global automotive industry.
"The excellent work force and business climate in Godollo will help UTA serve its growing business in western Europe, while establishing a presence in eastern Europe for future business development," he added.
For the past three months, the plant's all-Hungarian management and technical team has undergone intensive training at other UTA wire harness assembly plants in Europe. Production employees are being trained at the plant in wire harness manufacturing and continuous quality improvement processes.
UTA, with headquarters in Dearborn, is one of the world's largest producers of automotive wire harnesses, which distribute power and signals in vehicles. UTA operates 18 wire harness plants in Europe, 24 in North America and one in the Philippines. Its key wire harness customers in Europe include Ford Motor Co., Renault, Volvo, Peugeot S.A., Saab, Rover, Nissan, Audi and VW-Seat.
UTA is a unit of United Technologies Corp., based in Hartford, Conn., which provides a broad range of high-technology products and support services to the aerospace, business systems and auto industries.
