UNITED STEELWORKERS RATIFY NEW SIX-YEAR CONTRACT AT ACME STEEL, ACME PACKAGING OPERATIONS

 RIVERDALE, Ill., Oct. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of United Steelworkers of America Local Unions 1053 and 1657 have overwhelmingly ratified a new six-year contract at Acme Steel Company and Acme Packaging Corporation operations in the Chicago area. Results of the unions' mail ballot showed a ratification margin of 10 to 1.
 The new agreement, reached on Sept. 1, 1993, contains a no-strike provision and a wage reopener after three years, subject to arbitration. It will expire on Aug. 31, 1999.
 Acme Steel and Acme Packaging are subsidiaries of Acme Metals Incorporated (NASDAQ-NMS: ACME). Acme Metals, through its operating subsidiaries, is a fully integrated producer of steel, steel strapping and strapping tools, welded steel pipe and tube, and automotive and light truck jacks. Its common stock is traded on NASDAQ's National Market system with the symbol: ACME.
