UNITED STATIONERS INC. ANNOUNCES M. HECKTMAN ELECTS EARLY RETIREMENT

 DES PLAINES, Ill., Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- United Stationers (NASDAQ: USTR) announced today that Melvin L. Hecktman, 53, will resign his position as vice chairman at the end of August 1993 as part of his plan to take early retirement. Hecktman will continue to be involved in special projects for the company and will also continue to serve on the board of directors and as a member of the executive committee.
 Hecktman, who rejoined the company in 1989, had previously worked for United Stationers from 1961 to 1984 before leaving to start Hecktman Management, an investment management and consulting firm.
 United Stationers Inc. is North America's largest wholesaler of office products to resellers. Through its computer-based physical distribution system, more than 25,000 items are delivered to customers substantially within 24 hours of order placement through distribution points in 64 major hub cities.
 The common stock of United Stationers is reported through the NASDAQ system (symbol USTR) and is quoted in its national market system listings.
