            UNITED STATIONERS ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT WITH
                  NORTHWEST WHOLESALE STATIONERS
DES PLAINES, Ill., Feb. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- United Stationers Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: USTR) announced today that the company has reached an agreement with Northwest Wholesale Stationers Inc. (NWSI), an Oregon cooperative serving more than 300 office supply dealers. Under this agreement, which is effective April 1, 1992, United Stationers will acquire approximately $2.0 million of inventory and equipment and will lease a warehouse in Portland, Ore., from NWSI.
United Stationers will operate the 60,000-square-foot Portland warehouse as its 15th Regional Distribution Center. NWSI will continue to operate as an independent company, functioning as a dealer-owned marketing cooperative.
"This alliance between United Stationers and NWSI will provide significant opportunities for both companies. NWSI will be able to reduce its need to carry an inventory of office products for its members, and United Stationers will expand its geographic reach, serving NWSI's member-dealers and other dealers in the Pacific Northwest within 24 hours," according to Joel D. Spungin, chairman of the board of United Stationers.
United Stationers Inc. is North America's largest wholesaler of office products to resellers. Through its computer-based physical distribution system, more than 25,000 items are available substantially within 24 hours through distribution points in 57 major hub cities.
The common stock of United Stationers is traded over-the-counter (OTC), is reported through the NASDAQ system (symbol USTR) and is quoted in its national market system listings.
