UNITED STATES ADVANCED BATTERY CONSORTIUM TO ANNOUNCE MID-TERM BATTERY CONTRACT MAY 19; SATELLITE TRANSMISSION OF NEWS CONFERENCE, VNR
This morning, May 19, from 10-11 a.m., the United States Advanced Battery Consortium (USABC) will announce its first "mid-term" battery contract with the Ovonic Battery Company (OBC), and provide a demonstration of the battery's development process at OBC Plant No. 2, 1621 Northwood Drive, Troy, Mich. (Northwood intersects Maple Road just east of Crooks Road.)
The battery contract announcement will be made by J. Michael Davis, assistant secretary of Conservation and Renewable Energy, U.S. Department of Energy. USABC representatives from Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, the Electric Power Research Institute and officials from the Ovonic Battery Company, a subsidiary of Energy Conversion Devices (NASDAQ: ENER), will participate in the news conference and demonstration.
Depending upon the size and type of vehicle, the battery being developed under the first mid-term contract could provide two to three times the vehicle range of current battery technology.
The USABC has set "mid-term" goals for battery systems to broaden the capability of electric vehicles in the mid-1990s and "long-term" goals to develop batteries that would allow electric vehicles to have performance and be cost competitive with current gasoline-powered vehicles by the late 1990s.
For stations capable of pulling down satellite transmissions, the coordinates for the transmission are:
 Telstar 301, Transporter 3V, Audio 6.2 and 6.8
