UNITED SELECTS HUGHES REDIFFUSION TO SUPPLY B777 AND A320 FLIGHT TRAINING SYSTEMS IN A DEAL WORTH UP TO $75 MILLION

TORRANCE, Calif., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Hughes Rediffusion Simulation today announces that it has been selected by the major North American carrier, United Airlines, to supply flight simulators and training systems for its new Boeing 777 and A320 aircraft fleets.
The deal, which includes a number of options, is worth potentially $75 million over a four- to five-year period.
Under its terms, Hughes Rediffusion will initially supply full flight simulators for both aircraft types as well as a Level 5 Flight Training device for the A320. All equipment will be installed at United's Denver flight training center between mid-1993 and late 1994.
Major factors in Hughes Rediffusion's success were its ability to respond to United's near-term training needs associated with the A320 aircraft and the technologically demanding simulation requirements for the B777 -- particularly those associated with its advanced avionics and on-board computer systems.
Both the simulators will be built to Hughes Rediffusion's Concept 90 design standard and will be configured around the latest, Motorola-based, open systems computing architecture. Out-of-the- window scenes on the A320 will be provided by a Novoview SP-X550/WIDE visual simulation system. Visuals for the B777 simulator have yet to be confirmed.
Commenting, Hughes Rediffusion managing director, Peter M. Quast, said it was one of the most strategically important deals for the company in a decade.
"Simultaneously breaking into a new customer of a stature of United Airlines, and a new aircraft market like the B777, positions us well to sustain our share of the airline training systems market. This was a very hard fought, competitive contest and I believe ultimately we were selected for the quality and technology of our products and the commitments we were able to make to the program and its timescales.
"I am looking forward to a long and successful relationship with United Airlines," he said.
