UNITED RETAIL GROUP, INC., AUGUST 1992 SALES INCREASE 30 PERCENT
ROCHELLE PARK, N.J., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- United Retail Group, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: URGI), today announced that total sales for August 1992 were $24.8 million compared to $19.1 million in August 1991, a 30 percent increase. Comparable store sales for the month increased 5 percent.
Comparable store sales for August increased in the high single digits for the strip-based stores, Sizes Unlimited, and were flat at the mall-based stores, The Avenue.
Year-to-date total sales for fiscal 1992 were $181.7 million, an 18 percent increase, compared to $153.5 million last year. Year-to-date comparable store sales for fiscal 1992 increased 6 percent. (February is the first month of the company's fiscal year.)
Average store inventories, at month end, were slightly above plan. The inventory was clean and composed principally of Fall season merchandise. Merchandise margins for the month were on plan.
Raphael Benaroya, chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer, reported that Hurricane Andrew had forced the closing of up to 12 stores for several days in Florida and then in Louisiana. He added: "The store in the Cutler Ridge Malls in Florida will remain closed for an indefinite time for renovation but all the other stores affected by the storm reopened by Sept. 1, 1992 and their operations are returning to normal. I have the greatest respect for the associates in the disaster areas who were careful to secure the stores in advance of the storm and later found ways to get to work even though transportation was disrupted by storm damage."
George R. Remeta, executive vice president and chief financial officer, stated that he was satisfied with the progress of three ongoing infrastructure projects: constructing a national distribution center in Troy, Ohio; converting management of United Retail's credit card program to Citibank (South Dakota), N.A.; and changing the outsourcing provider for United Retail's management information systems to Integrated Systems Solutions Corporation in Lexington, Ky.
United Retail runs major retail chains devoted to large-size women's clothing. The chains are composed of Sizes Unlimited, which has 235 stores; The Avenue, which has 156 stores; and 16 Plus, which has 94 stores.
