UNITED MINE WORKERS WIN WEST VIRGINIA ORGANIZING DRIVE

WASHINGTON, May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) President Richard Trumka today praised 469 miners at a Zeigler Holding Corp. coal mine in West Virginia for "standing up to company arm twisting" to join the UMWA.
The workers, miners at Zeiglers' Marrowbone Development Corp.'s Mingo County, W.Va., coal operations, voted by a margin of 256 to 151 to join the UMWA after federally supervised balloting yesterday and today. Election results must now be certified by the National Labor Relations Board.
Trumka noted that the company pledged to "vigorously resist" the UMWA's organizing drive at Marrowbone which began after workers staged a 10 day strike in March to protest cuts in the company's health care plan. Zeigler, together with other coal companies, is currently locked in a contract dispute with the UMWA.
"The fact that the mine workers at Marrowbone stood up to Zeiglers' fear campaign to choose union representation sends a strong and important message across the coal fields," said Trumka.
"What miners at Marrowbone have said if that company promises are simply no substitute for the strength and security of a UMWA contract," Trumka said.
Trumka added that Zeiglers opposition to the UMWA drive at Marrowbone "is another reminder exactly how outdated Zeiglers' approach to labor-management relations is."
"At a time when many companies and other industries are looking for opportunities to work cooperatively with workers' unions, Zeigler and most other coal operators still behave as if their employees are their worst enemy," Trumka concluded.
