UNITED AMERICAN HEALTHCARE CORP.: COUNTYCARE PROGRAM IN LIMBO
DETROIT, May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- United American Healthcare Corporation (NASDAQ: UAHC) today said that funding for Wayne County's CountyCare Program has been suspended. Its resumption and continuation is dependent upon favorable action by the Michigan Legislature to cause the already-approved funds to be released and used for that purpose.
"This means that revenues from the program will not be included in the last two months of the current fiscal year which ends June 30, 1992," said Julius V. Combs, M.D., United American's chairman. "For two months, revenues would have been about $1.8 million. In terms of profitability, our best guess is the difference of about a penny or so at most in the fourth quarter at the current cap rates.
"Since inception, CountyCare has been run profitably. An important aspect of the program is that it is a prototype health care delivery system which demonstrates that indigent health care can be managed successfully. We believe that this is the kind of program that the country needs to be aware of and can fully consider as it struggles with rising health care costs and is concerned about large numbers of people needing medical care for themselves and their families. Without this kind of carefully managed program they become expensive emergency cases when early access and proper management could possibly have prevented the problem from becoming serious," Dr. Combs said.
Because of various funding problems associated with this program, the county has assumed full financial responsibility for it since Oct. 1, 1991. United American has been paid on a month-to-month basis at prior year rates.
The company has taken action to notify contracted physicians and medical facilities that they will no longer be able to continue the program.
United American Healthcare Corp. is a health care management company. UAHC provides a full range of services to two health maintenance organizations -- OmniCare Health Plan in Southeast Michigan and Personal Physician Care of Ohio, based in Cleveland. Through CountyCare, a program of Wayne County, Mich., the company has provided comprehensive health care services for approximately 11,000 general assistance recipients.
