UNITED AIRLINES WILL DISCONTINUE SERVICE AT SIX LOCATIONS EFFECTIVE SEPT. 8

CHICAGO, June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines announced today that, as part of its overall cost-reduction program, it plans to discontinue scheduled service at six U.S. locations effective Sept. 8, 1993.
The six locations are Bangor, Maine; Fargo, N.D.; Fresno, Calif.; Great Falls, Mont.; Huntsville, Ala.; and Sioux City, Iowa.
"It is with deep regret that we announce the closing of United's operations at these six locations," said J.C. Pope, president and chief operating officer. "But the economic reality is that we have sustained a very large financial loss at these cities over the past five years. We simply cannot wait any longer for a hoped-for turnaround and recovery."
United operates a total of 30 flights to and from the six locations and employs a total of 114 full-time and part-time employees. Systemwide, United operates more than 2,100 flights and employs more than 81,000 people.
For customers booked on flights for travel Sept. 8 and beyond, United said its reservations sales staff will make alternate travel arrangements.
