 UNITED AIRLINES TRAFFIC INCREASES 5.4 PERCENT
 CHICAGO, June 5 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines today reported that


its total scheduled revenue passenger miles (RPMs) increased 5.4 percent in May compared with the same month of 1991.
 The airline's total scheduled RPMs were 7,317,999,000 compared with 6,944,691,000 in May of 1991.
 In commenting on the month of May, J. C. Pope, president and chief operating officer, said, "Despite the lower domestic fares resulting from the recent industry-wide price restructuring, our domestic traffic during May was disappointing. The European market, on the other hand, continued to be quite strong. We expect to see healthy European traffic throughout the summer season as we add new service to Brussels, Milan, Rome and Athens, as well as capacity increases in many of our existing European markets."
 For May, domestic revenue passenger miles totaled 4,722,998,000, a decrease of 2.4 percent from 4,837,641,000 accumulated in May a year ago. Pacific revenue passenger miles totaled 1,734,104,000, an increase of 9.8 percent from 1,579,864,000 a year ago. Atlantic revenue passenger miles totaled 701,623,000, an increase of 39.8 percent from 501,866,000 a year ago. Latin revenue passenger miles totaled 159,274,000, an increase of 529 percent from 25,320,000.
 Total scheduled available seat miles (ASMs) were 11,122,775,000, up 8.7 percent from 10,229,394,000 a year ago. Domestic ASMs were 7,349,093,000, an increase of 0.1 percent from 7,343,602,000 a year ago. Pacific ASMs totaled 2,434,837,000, up 12.0 percent from 2,173,506,000 a year ago. Atlantic ASMs totaled 916,773,000, up 37.3 percent from 667,745,000. Latin ASMs totaled 422,072,000, an increase of 847.6 percent from 44,541,000.
 The airline flew 5,289,000 passengers in scheduled service in May, a decrease of 2.2 percent from 5,409,000 flown a year earlier.
 Total cargo ton miles for May were 143,532,000, up 11.3 percent from 129,002,000 a year ago.
 Total RPMs including charter flights for May were 7,326,447,000, up 4.9 percent from 6,984,558,000 a year ago.
 January Thru May Traffic
 For the full year, total scheduled RPMs increased 10.6 percent to 33,039,173,000 from 29,870,483,000 in 1991.
 Total scheduled ASMs increased 10.7 percent to 53,075,152,000 from 47,941,471,000 last year.
 Passenger load factor during the year was 62.2 percent, down 0.1 point from 62.3 percent in 1991.
 Total cargo ton miles were 657,729,000, an increase of 8.9 percent from 603,913,000 last year.
 Total RPMs including charter for the year were 33,121,391,000, an increase of 9.5 percent from 30,236,542,000 in 1991. All statistics are preliminary.
