 UNITED AIRLINES NAMES POPE PRESIDENT AND CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER;
 ANNOUNCES NEW EXECUTIVE ASSIGNMENTS
 CHICAGO, April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Responding to United Airlines' rapid growth, particularly in international markets, and its focus on quality service, the company has expanded executive assignments and responsibilities.
 Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Stephen M. Wolf announced today that J. C. Pope, formerly vice chairman and chief financial officer, has been named president and chief operating officer of United Airlines. Pope joined United in 1988 as executive vice president and chief financial officer and has served as executive vice president-marketing and planning and vice chairman. He will continue to serve as a member of the UAL Corporation (NYSE: UAL) board of directors.
 Pope holds an M.B.A. from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration and a bachelor's degree in engineering and applied science from Yale University. He is married and has three children.
 In his new position, Pope is responsible for airline operations, marketing, planning, customer service, international and human resources.
 With the naming of a chief operating officer, Wolf, who retains his position as chairman and CEO, will be able to concentrate on the company's strategic plans, government and market relationships -- both in the United States and internationally -- and the organization's overall quality focus.
 "Throughout his 15-year aviation career, Jack Pope has demonstrated the superb ability to lead organizations and produce impressive results," Wolf said. "He is an exceptionally able individual, who will be responsible for a number of key functions going forward."
 Other significant changes in this new organization are:
 -- James M. Guyette, formerly executive vice president-field services, becomes executive vice president-marketing and planning. This reassignment provides the airline with an even stronger focus on revenue and market opportunities.
 -- Joseph R. O'Gorman, formerly executive vice president-flight services, becomes executive vice president-operations and adds to his responsibilities two other organizations: food service and Air Wisconsin, the commuter air carrier that is a subsidiary of UAL Corporation.
 -- Lawrence M. Nagin, formerly senior vice president-corporate affairs and general counsel, becomes executive vice president-corporate affairs and general counsel.
 -- International operations now account for more than one-third of the airline's capacity, so United has established an international division, led by Senior Vice President James E. Goodwin. Goodwin previously served as senior vice president-maintenance operations. The new division includes United's Atlantic, Latin America and Pacific operations. Because of the scope of the Pacific operation, it has been divided into two areas. James C. Brennan, formerly regional vice president-Japan, is United's vice president-Pacific-north, which includes both Japan and Korea; Don Curran, formerly country manager- Hong Kong, is vice president-Pacific-south, which covers Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, People's Republic of China, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.
 -- Replacing Goodwin as senior vice president-maintenance operations is Rono J. Dutta, formerly vice president-base maintenance. Dutta oversees all of the maintenance operations for United's fleet of nearly 500 aircraft, including the airline's maintenance centers in San Francisco, Oakland, and beginning in 1993, Indianapolis. A new vice president-base maintenance will be announced shortly.
 -- United has established a new Hawaii division, led by Senior Vice President William C. Speicher, who previously served as senior vice president-Pacific. The creation of a senior-level position with dedicated responsibility for the Hawaii market reflects the importance of the Islands to United and the airline's desire to expand there.
 -- United will name an executive vice president and chief financial officer at a later date.
 "We have assembled and developed a superb corps of executives, who have guided this company through record-setting expansion in recent years," Wolf said. "Our new organizational alignment will enable us to maintain our focus on the details of the business and provide us with the kind of structure we need to compete in the highly competitive global marketplace with a clear focus on setting new service standards in all of our domestic and international markets."
