UNITED AIRLINES LAUNCHES LOS ANGELES-MEXICO CITY SERVICE, BECOMES LARGEST FOREIGN AIR CARRIER IN MEXICAN CAPITAL

UNITED AIRLINES LAUNCHES LOS ANGELES-MEXICO CITY SERVICE,
BECOMES LARGEST FOREIGN AIR CARRIER IN MEXICAN CAPITAL
CHICAGO, June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Airline service between Los Angeles and Mexico City will receive a major boost tomorrow, when United Airlines inaugurates four daily flights on that route.
"The number of flights we are placing on this route demonstrates our strong commitment to two important cities -- Los Angeles and Mexico City," said United Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Stephen M. Wolf.
Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, California Deputy Secretary for Commerce Jan Hall and Mexican Consul Alejandro Schiavon will be on hand to assist United's Senior Vice President-Customer Service Steve Steers in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Los Angeles International Airport prior to the departure of United Flight 877 at 2:55 p.m. Before each of United's four daily flights on June 4 to the Mexican capital at 7:05 a.m., 2:55 p.m., 6:05 p.m. and 12:25 a.m. on June 5, United will hold drawings for free tickets to Mexico City.
With the new flights from Los Angeles to Mexico City and other new service, United Airlines will become the largest foreign air carrier in the Mexican capital.
Beginning this week, United will offer 105 weekly flights from Mexico City's Benito Juarez International Airport, including a second daily flight to Chicago effective June 4. United tomorrow also will launch twice-daily service to Guatemala City, daily service to San Jose, Costa Rica, and, beginning June 5, daily service to San Salvador, marking United's first service to El Salvador.
United already operates daily flights between Mexico City and Orlando, San Francisco and Washington, D.C., and two daily flights between Mexico City and Miami.
United developed its plans for expansion in Mexico in 1989, following Wolf's meeting with Mexico's President Salinas. The carrier's weekly available seats from Mexico City this summer will increase by more than 775 percent from the 1989 level.
"The latest additions to our schedule establish Mexico City as a connecting complex for United, providing a connection point from Central America and Mexico to our five international gateways in Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.," Wolf said. "From these gateways, travelers and shippers can fly to more than 150 cities throughout North America, the Pacific, Europe and Latin America."
United operates all of its Mexico City flights with Boeing 737-300 aircraft, except for service to and from San Francisco, which is flown with Boeing 757 aircraft.
 More Service in Latin America
Also this week, United will offer new service between Miami and three Central American cities. Beginning tomorrow, United will add new flights between Miami and Central America, including daily service to Panama City and an increase in San Jose, Costa Rica, service from daily to 11 flights weekly. On June 5, United will inaugurate service between Miami and San Salvador with three flights weekly.
With those additions, United will offer a total of 63 flights weekly from Miami to Latin America.
