UNITED AIRLINES AUTOMATES FIELD SALES FORCE

UNITED AIRLINES AUTOMATES FIELD SALES FORCE
CHICAGO, July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines announced today it

will be automating its field sales force in the U.S. with "Insight," notebook-size portable computers and printers.
"Insight will contain sufficient business account and personal management tools to provide our sales organization better insight and support for all of the various facets of field sales management," said James M. Guyette, executive vice president-marketing and planning. "Most significantly, they will allow United's account executives to provide greatly enhanced service to travel agencies and corporate accounts."
United's 400 account executives will be equipped with the notebook computers beginning this month, and their capabilities will be realized immediately by travel agencies and corporate accounts in such key areas as generating contracts on the spot, improved response by United to competitive initiatives and eventually access to Apollo, United's computerized reservations system.
United has developed the internal field automation product with Shepherd Systems, a software development firm in Houston. Shepherd Systems has an established reputation for excellence in the area of field sales automation software development.
Various potential products being evaluated by United were field tested for the past six months leading up to the final selection. Chosen following the research period were the Toshiba T4400SXC, a 486 active matrix color notebook with 25 megahertz and 120 megabytes of hard disk storage and a weight of less than eight pounds.
Accompanying the computers will be the Kodak Diconix 701 portable printers with built-in sheet feeders and multiple fonts. The printer weighs less than six pounds.
Both battery-powered products are deemed state of the art for field sales support.
