    UNITED AIRLINES ANNOUNCES EXPANDED LATIN AMERICAN SCHEDULES;
    NEW SERVICE, ADDITIONAL FREQUENCIES COMING FEB. 13, MARCH 2
    CHICAGO, Dec. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines today announced it plans to offer expanded service to Latin America beginning Feb. 13 and March 2, 1992, implementing exemption authority it received from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).
    The DOT has authorized United to begin service for at least six months on projected new flights to Mexico, Central America and South America over routes previously operated by Pan American. United acquired Pan Am's Latin American operations and other assets Dec. 9 for $135 million. That acquisition is subject to final government approval.
    The expanded schedules build on United's previously announced plans to launch service Jan. 15, 1992, between the United States and Venezuela and Trinidad and Jan. 31, 1992, between the United States and Brazil and Argentina.
    "We are announcing today our plan to offer comprehensive air service to Mexico, Central America and South America with scheduled flights from such key U.S. gateways as New York and Miami," said Stephen M. Wolf, chairman and president.
    "We are excited by the prospect and challenge of soon linking United's strong domestic, Atlantic and Pacific route networks to new destinations throughout Latin America. Employees across our system are actively and enthusiastically laying the groundwork for a smooth introduction of United's high level of service to this region," he said.
    Among the highlights of United's schedule:
    -- Non-stop service three times a week between Miami and Buenos Aires, Argentina, with continuing service to Santiago, Chile, beginning with the Feb. 13, 1992 schedule change.
    -- Service three times a week between New York and Montevideo, Uruguay, with an intermediate stop in Rio de Janeiro, beginning with the Feb. 13, 1992 schedule change.
    -- Non-stop service four times a week between Miami and Sao Paulo, Brazil, beginning with the Feb. 13, 1992 schedule change.
    -- Non-stop service twice a day between Miami and Mexico City, Mexico, beginning with the March 2, 1992 schedule change.
    -- United will operate daily flights between Miami and the Central American cities of San Jose, Costa Rica; Guatemala City, Guatemala; and Panama City, Panama. In addition, the carrier will operate three weekly non-stop flights between Miami and San Salvador, El Salvador, and an additional flight four times a week between Miami and San Jose, Costa Rica. All of these flights will begin with the March 2, 1992 schedule change.
    These flights between the United States and South America will be operated in Boeing 747 equipment. Flights between Miami and Mexico and Central America will be operated in Boeing 737 equipment.
    United announced earlier this week its plans to begin daily Boeing 757 service on the Latin American routes it acquired from Pan Am Jan. 15, 1992, between both New York and Miami and Caracas. The New York flight will continue to Port of Spain, Trinidad.
    On Jan. 31, 1992, United will launch daily Boeing 747 service between New York and Rio de Janeiro, with continuing service to Buenos Aires, and also between Miami and Rio de Janeiro with continuing service to Sao Paulo, Brazil.
