UNIT COMPANIES ENTERS JOINT PARTNERSHIP WITH CERTIFIED GROCERS

 JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The Unit Companies today announced it has entered into a partnership agreement with Certified Grocers of California, Ltd., to assume day-to-day responsibility for the Preferred Public Storage operation on Feb. 1, 1993. Certified Grocers is the parent company of Preferred Public Storage (PPS), an Ontario, Calif., based grocery distribution company, that operates 405,000 square feet of public warehouse space and employs 30 people in southern California. Unit is one of the nation's largest providers of third- party logistics.
 According to Al Plamann, senior vice president and chief financial officer of Certified Grocers, the decision to enter into a partnership with Unit will provide PPS's customers with national distribution coverage, enhanced market competitiveness, greater systems support and a continued commitment to high quality service. "For the past several years, PPS has provided warehousing and distribution services to a wide variety of clients in southern California. Our partnership with Unit will only strengthen our capabilities in this market."

"Unit will gain from the partnership with Certified as we will broaden our food and grocery capabilities in the highly competitive Los Angeles market."
 The Unit Companies, based in Jacksonville, Fla., is a subsidiary of GATX Corp. (NYSE: GMT) in Chicago. The Unit Companies employs 3,000 associates in more than 100 facilities nationwide and in Mexico. Unit provides logistics services to its growing base of 750 customers by effectively storing, processing and delivering their products through a wide range of third-party services.
 GATX Corp. is a $3.4 billion service-based asset company which provides capital equipment and related services for use in various domestic and international markets for rail, aircraft, bulk liquid storage terminals and pipelines, logistics support and Great Lakes shipping.
