UNISYS SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENTS PHARMACY CLAIMS POINT OF SERVICE SYSTEM FOR IOWA MEDICAID

 MCLEAN, Va., Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) announced today the successful implementation of its Medicaid Point of Service (POS) system for the state of Iowa. Pharmacists in the state are now able to process claims for Medicaid-covered pharmacy expenses on-line, using a personal computer or card-swipe mechanism.
 "We are pleased that the Iowa Medicaid program has adopted the proven Unisys Point of Service system to better serve their customer -- the Medicaid recipient," said James M. Bridges, vice president and general manager of Systems Services, the Unisys business unit that manages the system. "As one of the nation's leading Medicaid transaction processors, our company readily recognizes the cost benefits and service enhancements in such a system."
 The Iowa system went into service Oct. 4. Plans call for expanding the system to include prospective drug utilization beginning in January 1994. This system will alert pharmacies to potential adverse drug interactions or other potential problems involved in dispensing prescription drugs. The Unisys system is expandable to process other claim types, such as medical and dental claims, at a later date.
 Features of the POS system include immediate eligibility verification and claims status notification, improved timeliness of claims payment and error correction capability, ability to identify inappropriate services and immediate notification of payment amount. All of this is accomplished through on-line transactions from the pharmacist's terminal directly to a Medicaid computer over a telecommunications network.
 The Unisys POS system provides the following on-line services to dispensing pharmacies:
 -- Eligibility verification -- includes benefit coverage, third-party liability, managed care participation, restricted services and properly enrolled providers;
 -- Claims adjudication -- includes edits, claim status notification for the provider and claim preparation for payment processing.
 The Iowa Medicaid system processes 4 million pharmacy claims a year. It is anticipated that eventually 90 percent of these claims will be processed using the new paperless system. Claims submitted on paper, diskette and tape also can be processed. These improvements are a continuation of Unisys efforts to improve the efficiencies and quality of service while reducing the claims processing cost and provider service costs.
 Unisys currently provides Medicaid fiscal agent services in Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Oklahoma and has been selected to begin service in Florida in July 1994.
 Unisys Corporation is a leading information systems company with 60,000 customers in more than 100 countries. The company is a major supplier of information services and technology to financial service, government, telecommunications, airline and other commercial markets.
