UNIQUEST TO INSTALL SELF-CHECKOUT IN 50 PATHMARK SUPERMARKETS

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- UNIQUEST Incorporated (NASDAQ: UQST) announced today a contract with the Pathmark division of Supermarkets General Corporation to implement UNIQUEST's patented customer self-checkout system, the Automated Checkout Machine (ACM(R)), in 50 Pathmark Supermarkets subject to the satisfactory outcome of an eight-store test. The ACM uses laser bar code scanner/scales and a proprietary merchandise security system that verifies each item scanned, allowing shoppers to scan and check out their own groceries before paying at centrally located cashiers.
Pathmark has tested a store with ACMs since July of 1990 and the successful implementation of that store was a primary reason for the decision to expand the service. Phase I, scheduled for completion by the end of October 1993, will entail installation in eight stores and will start in September. Phase II is scheduled for 1994, subject to the successful completion of Phase I, and includes the implementation of an additional 42 stores. Pathmark made the decision to install the ACMs for the following reasons: improved customer service, increased accuracy of the checkout process, and an opportunity to increase market share for the stores using self-checkout. Supermarkets General operates 147 Pathmark Supermarkets in the Northeast.
August P. Klein of UNIQUEST stated, "Pathmark is an innovative industry leader and we are pleased that they have decided to implement the ACM system in additional stores. We believe Pathmark's decision to bring the latest in service technology to their shoppers will enhance their reputation for outstanding customer service. This expansion further validates the enthusiasm shown by the supermarket industry for the proven benefits that the ACM provides to stores and their shoppers."
