UNIQUEST ANNOUNCES FIRST NATIONAL SUPERMARKETS OF OHIO TO INSTALL AUTOMATED CHECKOUT SYSTEM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- UNIQUEST Incorporated (NASDAQ: UQST) and First National Supermarkets of Ohio (FINAST) jointly announced today a multi-store installation program for UNIQUEST's patented customer self-checkout system. The Automated Checkout Machine (ACM(R)) uses laser bar code scanner/scales and a proprietary merchandise security system that verifies each item scanned, allowing shoppers to check out their own groceries before paying centrally located cashiers.
When William C. Holsworth, FINAST Ohio president and CEO, was asked about the decision to install automated checkout machines, he stated, "We're excited to be the first in our area to initiate this new customer service offering to complement our conventional lanes. We've watched this technology evolve over the last half dozen years and are now convinced that it will add significantly to our customer service offerings. Now many of our customers will find that ACMs will enhance their shopping experience."
Greg Spragg, FINAST Ohio vice president of Store Operations, feels that today's environment calls for more than providing the right products at the best prices. According to Spragg, "We must create the flexibility to allow our employees to provide the maximum customer service possible. The ACMs provide significant help in this area because they're open all of the time, thereby reducing checkout lines."
Installation of the self-checkout system is slated for mid-July. FINAST is a supermarket chain headquartered in Maple Heights, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, and has locations throughout the state of Ohio. The 45-store chain is a wholly owned subsidiary of Europe-based Ahold U.S.A. FINAST offers a number of innovative customer services to shoppers including the option to phone or fax in food orders for in- store pickup or outside delivery.
According to August P. Klein, president and CEO of UNIQUEST , "Shopper acceptance of the product has been excellent. FINAST is known for providing quality customer service and the ACM is another major step in maintaining that leadership position."
