UNION TO RALLY AT DETROIT EDISON CHAIRMAN JOHN LOBBIA'S NORTHVILLE HOME

UNION TO RALLY AT DETROIT EDISON CHAIRMAN JOHN LOBBIA'S NORTHVILLE HOME
NORTHVILLE, Mich., Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was released by the Utility Workers Union of America Local 223, AFL-CIO:
Members of Utility Workers Union of America (UWUA) Local 223, concerned citizens and community leaders will gather at the Northville home of Detroit Edison Chairman and President John Lobbia, beginning at 6 tonight to protest the utility's ongoing failure to negotiate a new contract for the 2,900 members of Local 223.
The rally and caravan will call on Lobbia to personally intervene in the stalled talks and demand that his negotiators stop their stalling and start to negotiate in good faith. Local 223 members have been working without a contract since May 31, 1992.
"The company has utilized every unfair bargaining tactic in the book to prevent our membership from obtaining a fair and decent contract," explained Local 223 President George Manoogian. "Our members' efficiency and productivity have contributed greatly to the personal wealth of Mr. Lobbia, who receives bonus payments for lowering costs and raising profits.
"While Mr. Lobbia and his top management are earning big increases, our members are facing concessions, despite the fact that this utility is extremely profitable. We feel that his neighbors and community should know that his selfishness and greed are hurting thousands of working families throughout Metro Detroit."
