UNION TEXAS PETROLEUM AWARDED SECOND PERMIT FOR COALBED
 METHANE RECOVERY IN SPAIN
HOUSTON, Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Union Texas Petroleum Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: UTH) today reported that its subsidiary, Union Texas Espana Inc., has been awarded a second hydrocarbon permit by Spain's Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism to utilize coalbed methane recovery technology to explore for natural gas in coal deposits.
Under the permit, Union Texas Espana, as operator with a 72 percent working interest, and Empresa Nacional Hulleras del Norte, with a 28 percent working interest, will explore for coalbed methane in the principality of Asturias in northern Spain. The permit calls for a six- year exploration program on the Asturias Central prospect, which covers approximately 92,200 acres (373 square kilometers). During the program's first three years, Union Texas plans to spend approximately $2 million on exploration activities.
The process of coalbed methane recovery involves drilling wells to a depth of about 3,000 to 7,000 feet to produce natural gas in coal deposits. The gas is then transported via pipelines to industrial, utility and residential end users. Union Texas successfully utilized this technology to develop gas reserves on previously-owned leases in New Mexico's Fruitland coal seams.
In August 1991, Union Texas Espana was awarded a hydrocarbon permit by Spain's Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism to use coalbed methane recovery technology to explore for gas in the Villamanin prospect in the province of Leon. Union Texas, which has a 100 percent working interest in the Villamanin prospect, has submitted drilling plans to the government.
Union Texas said that it expects to drill one or more exploratory wells on the Asturias Central or Villamanin prospects during 1992.
Union Texas said that it has identified other opportunities for coalbed methane projects in other western European countries and currently is seeking permits from these governments.
One of the nation's largest independent producers, Houston-based Union Texas Petroleum Holdings, Inc., explores for and produces oil and gas overseas primarily in the U.K. North Sea, Indonesia and other strategic international areas. The company also has petrochemicals interests in the United States.
