UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL TO SUPPLY AUTOMATIC TRAIN CONTROL (ATC)
SYSTEM FOR LOS ANGELES' METRO GREEN LINE
PITTSBURGH, April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Union Switch & Signal Inc. (US&S) announced it has been awarded a contract valued at $57.5 million to design, build and install the first fully automated, driverless light rail system in the United States, for Los Angeles' Metro Green Line.
Late yesterday afternoon the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission voted unanimously to have US&S proceed immediately to implement the full contract. The system will control the I-105 and the El Segundo segments of the Green Line consisting of 19.5 miles, 14 existing passenger stations, and two future stations.
In making today's announcement, Walter Alessandrini, president and chief executive officer of Union Switch & Signal, said, "Winning the L.A. Green Line contract clearly demonstrates that Union Switch & Signal is not only the current leader in train control technology but, with our railroad centralized train control centers, we are well at the forefront of technological developments for both the transit and railroad industries."
"When completed, Los Angeles' Metro Green Line will be the most technologically advanced transit control system in the world," Alessandrini concluded. Engineering is expected to begin immediately with revenue service slated to begin in mid-1994.
The system will incorporate a central ATC facility, wayside ATC equipment, carborne ATC equipment, and equipment for the Hawthorne yard and shop. In addition to the centralized ATC functions, the system will also perform automatic train protection (ATP), automatic train operation (ATO) and automatic train supervision (ATS) functions. The system will implement fixed block control track circuits and will feature two-minute designed headway and a 2-1/2-minute operating headway.
The centralized ATC system will be totally automatic, needing no operator intervention. Working with the ATO and ATS systems, the ATC system will automatically dispatch trains on schedule; monitor train performance and destination control; maintain schedule and headway management; initiate special train moves; detect failures in the wayside and carborne devices; and, as scheduled, automatically remove trains from revenue service. The central facility will also feature dual computers to assure availability in the unlikely event of an equipment failure.
The wayside ATP functions will include train detection, speed selection, vital logic, emergency stops, berthing commands, heading control, coupling and uncoupling control as well as platform, wayside, seismic, and intrusion interfaces.
The carborne ATO/ATS functions will include train identification, performance level controls, event logging, departure testing, and schedule modifications as well as diagnostics and vehicle health functions. The ATO equipment will also assure speed regulation and accurate station stopping.
Train movements at the Hawthorne yard and shop will be controlled by the central ATC system at the yard control facility. Trains will enter and exit revenue service according to pre-programmed schedules. These movements will be continuously and automatically tracked and monitored. The system will also perform automatic coupling and uncoupling at the yard and manage car consist makeup.
