UNION CARBIDE TO COMPLETE FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR OXO ALCOHOLS EXPANSION
DANBURY, Conn., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Union Carbide Corporation (NYSE: UK) said today it will complete a feasibility study late this year to determine the need for a new world-scale oxo alcohols facility in the U.S. Gulf Coast.
The facility would supplement the company's existing production at its Texas City, Texas, plant and include butanol, isobutanol and 2-ethylhexanol, intermediates used in paints and coatings, plasticizers, lube oil additives, surfactants and other industrial applications.
"The study is part of our ongoing assessment of worldwide market needs and underscores Union Carbide's commitment to maintaining world leadership in oxo alcohols and derivatives," said James F. Flynn, vice president of the company's solvents and coatings materials division. "If, as expected, the decision is made to proceed with the project, major expenditures will commence early in 1993," he added.
The facility is to be based on Union Carbide/Davy McKee low-pressure oxo technology, which is used by more than 90 percent of the alcohol- producing oxo plants built worldwide since 1977.
