UNION CARBIDE PURCHASES ALL-ACRYLIC LATEXES FROM UNOCAL

UNION CARBIDE PURCHASES ALL-ACRYLIC LATEXES FROM UNOCAL
DANBURY, Conn., May 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Union Carbide Corporation

(NYSE: UK) today announced that its UCAR Emulsion Systems (UES) business is acquiring three all-acrylic coating products from Unocal Corporation of Los Angeles.
The purchase includes technology to produce emulsions for the architectural and specialty product markets -- segments that typically include house paints, tennis court and track coatings, traffic marking paints, and concrete sealers. Customer lists are also included in the transaction.
"The new products will make us a stronger competitor in these markets," said Paul J. Johnston, UES vice president and general manager. "With our other all-acrylic, vinyl acrylic, acrylic terpolymer and styrene acrylic latexes, we can now provide our customers a full range of products."
To assure a smooth transition, the three emulsions, designated RES 6004, RES 6034 and RES 6510, will continue to be made at existing Unocal facilities for up to a year as UES gears up for production. They will ultimately be made in existing UES manufacturing facilities. No transfer of facilities or equipment is involved in the purchase and the transaction will not have a material financial impact on Union Carbide or Unocal.
In addition to polymer emulsions for architectural and specialty markets, UES supplies ingredients for adhesives and construction products. The company has headquarters and research facilities in Cary, N.C., and operates five plants in the U.S., one in Puerto Rico, one in Ecuador, and seven in Southeast Asia. Plants are under construction in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and Guongdang Province, People's Republic of China.
