UNION CARBIDE OPENS NATION'S FIRST FULL-SCALE,
MULTI-PLASTICS RECYCLING PLANT
PISCATAWAY, N.J., Jan. 30 -- Union Carbide Corp. (NYSE: UK) today announced the opening of the first full-scale, multi-plastics recycling facility in the U.S. The plant can reclaim 27,000 tons of discarded plastic each year, a capacity equivalent to a two-acre area, seven stories high.
Unique to the industry, Union Carbide's new plant will accept post-consumer polyethylene film used for bags and wrapping, as well as high-density polyethylene (HDPE) - used in milk, juice and water jugs and soap, detergent and cleaning agent bottles - and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) - used in soda, liquor and salad dressing bottles.
Recyclable plastics - the plant's "raw materials" - are being obtained from curbside recycling programs sponsored by communities in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania that fall within a 250-mile radius of the plant. That geographic area is home to 16 percent of the U.S. population.
One of Union Carbide's first, major customers for its line of recycled plastics is Rubbermaid, Inc., which is using recycled polyethylene resin from the Piscataway plant to produce 32-gallon, blow-molded trash containers. Other customers include producers of soap and detergent bottles, drainage pipes, refuse and recycling containers, garbage and merchandise bags, and fencing.
Union Carbide intends to integrate its plastics recycling operation into the company's total product line and pursue new recycled product uses, according to W. Keith Atkins, business director for Solid Waste Management. "We're committed to plastics recycling and believe it can be a successful business venture," said Atkins. "Our customers can expect the same quality service and technical expertise we provide with our prime resins. And we'll be active on the research side, where we envision some real break-throughs for recycled resins, such as single- layered bottles."
Union Carbide is one of the world's leading suppliers of polyethylene and of ethylene glycol, a key intermediate in PET production. The company developed and licenses worldwide the UNIPOL Polyolefin Process, which has been recognized as the most waste-free, environmentally protective polyethylene manufacturing process in the world.
